Program/Service Definitions
Senior Companion Program The Senior Companion Program (SCP) is a person to person enterprise built on the age-old tradition of neighbor helping neighbor. Senior companions support thousands of older persons with developmental disabilities, Alzheimer's disease, mental illness and/or other conditions which make them frail and at-risk. Senior Companions serve 20 hours per week and, in return for their services, receive a tax-free stipend which does not affect other benefits or services they may receive. In addition, the volunteers receive transportation assistance, insurance, a daily meal and annual medical check-up. All Senior Companions complete 40 hours of orientation prior to service and are required to participate in monthly in-service training sessions. Potential volunteers must be 55 years of age or older and have income at or below 200% of the HHS established level of poverty.
